If you want to move from one level to the next level with your game, you need to know what’s important, you’ll need to know what you need to achieve, and you need to have a program based on achieving it.
For example, if your goal is to break 85 you need to get up and down at a rate of only one and four times with your chipping, you need to 3 putt less and hit the fairway at least 7 times a round.
Whatever your scoring goal, your program will be unique to you and I will get to guide you through it.
Mostly this will be a discovery for yourself in your training. The best players in the world are experimental. They take ownership and accountability very often.
For many players, their energy is high at the beginning of any program, but they overestimate what they can achieve in the first month or first three months and severely underestimate what is achievable over 12 or 24 months. Between us we can manage your expectations and set achievable goals, but above all, with this programme you must own it.
Yes, you will have some highs, and you have some lows, but if you believe in the process, and you stay with it despite all the inevitable setbacks, I guarantee you will achieve success.
It's where there are setbacks when most players will be going onto YouTube and searching for easy golf tips or quick golf, or golf hack. But life is not like that, Golf is not like that. If you think it is please stop reading now this program will not be for you.
My job is to give you the tools and support and the good news is you will not see anyone as committed to you and your dreams as I will be.
This is not just about technique. You are a human, you’re a person and you have a life and Golf is hard, life is hard. I will help you through much more than just your technique.
Ultimately, you got to own it, so what do I mean?
You need to know what you are wanting to do you need to know your goal and the direction you want to travel, you need to know how fast or how slow are you wanting to move towards your goals.
...And what will I do? I will make the journey as smooth as I can for you and I will keep you on track. I will help you when you’re down and keep you grounded if you get too high.
Will you fail? Yes you'll fail often, as I said this is hard, golf is hard, but each failure gets you closer. You just need to decide how quickly you want to fail because the quicker you fail the quicker you get to finally succeed, all of this must be your responsibility, you must be responsible.
If you make a mistake you must own it otherwise you’ll never learn and you’ll never develop. I love working with a player with a player with the courage and honesty to own their mistakes and come to me , with honesty and say "I can learn from this and make progress", I love players with the courage to say "I’m going to go for this and I’ll see this through".
That’s exciting, particularly when they declare it to their friends and family and make that public commitment.
The players who improve fastest accept what happens and get on with it.
Your program will be built on targeted training, building blocks of what matters and what is measurable.
What if things don’t go well? We'll deal with it, adjust and forge on.
What if things go well? Great, we'll raise the bar, make the most of your ability around the green or off the tee for example.
What is the timetable? I’d love to guarantee you you will score in the 70s orin the 80s or in the 90s by a certain date but Golf is never like that. Unlike if you take up running or lifting weights , speed or your maximum weight will improve linearly and predictably, of course it slows but it is generally reliable.
Progress in Golf is not like, I wish it was. Yes after three months or six months you will be better , I know because you'll have a roadmap and you will be developing the skills, more importantly, your training development program will ensure progress, but I can’t guarantee exactly when it will happen. You can never know there are too many things in Golf that I will have to kick in for you to be successful the way you want to be
... and if anyone tells you they can tell you when you will get what you want, run from them - if they will lie about that they will probably lie about other stuff too.
Your personal program would have anywhere from 50 to 100 specific elements we will work on from A to B to C , your own to do a list, your program will be specifically designed for you.
Is this all about score in a short game? Yes your short game is important but it’s not just your short game, you have to get to the green effectively.
Is it about putting? Yes putting is important and you'll need to know the value of making 15 footers or avoiding three parts. For example, you can chip and putt well, but if you’re taking 4 shots to get to the green, compare it to a three putt after only two shots to get to the green , which of those gives you the better score? We'll deal with facts, deal with reality, not myths and rumours and worn out old fashion science.
This type of program is my obsession.
What will happen to break 90. Firstly you need to avoid the big numbers. Short game is important to break 90. You need to hit more fairways and greens and regulations so that’s what we'd work on. Not all of the greens in regulation and all the fairways need to be hit you just need to hit more of them and that will make your life and your golf life much more stressful and it will allow you to better manage yourself around the golf course how would you feel you’ll feel more relaxed, why? Because for the first time you are on a pathway you can believe in and trust through the seasons, we will modify the plans to suit the time of year in the summer and the spring.
Will you see progress in your practice? Yes you will see progress in your practice, then you’ll have three holes or six holes that you play well then it will be seven holes and eight holes.
How much time will I need to commit? less than you think but you will need to commit time and it is commitment that’s the key, little and often, stick to well devised plan, focused on the areas that matter and enjoy the rest of your life.
How can that be Paul? Surely more is better ! No, smarter is better. Hitting 40 balls with purpose within a structured practice session is twice as effective as hitting a 100 balls without real purpose.
Throughout this program you will change mentally. You will never be the same again with your golf, your decision-making, your confidence will be forever different.
I continue to be as much as a student of the game as you are. I’ve learnt from the PGA and from other industries and other golf coaching organisations about how to learn in the best and quickest ways for myself and for my players. Playing golf is not about playing golf swing it is about golf, it’s complex it involves emotions, highs, lows, embarrassment, pride, strength, finesse, open fairways, tight fairways trees and bunkers, water hazards and writing your scores on a scorecard.
